Benefits of Speed Training
Speed is king in sports, and golf is no exception. From tour players to recreational golfers, everyone is chasing speed because speed in golf leads to distance. Whether it’s clubhead speed or ball speed, golfers want more.
I’ve written before about speed. New technology can certainly give a quick boost to club and/or ball speed. Simply practicing swinging faster can lead to speed gains. Training for speed with Superspeed Golf and/or doing speed and power-oriented exercises like jumps and med ball slams will get you even more speed. Lifting heavy weights and getting stronger will also add speed. Better yet, train for speed and strength and see really big gains over time.
I’m a huge advocate for gaining speed for golf because I’m a believer in hitting the ball as far as you can with enough control. Golf is a game of proximity to the hole. Every shot is intended to get the ball closer to the hole until it finds the bottom of the cup. While golfers need to be able to hit short game shots well to score, how far a golfer can hit a ball is the biggest indicator of scoring potential.
But there are more benefits to training to gain speed for golf than just distance.
First, when swinging a driver at max effort speed, your brain starts to self-organize. This means your brain starts to figure out how to get your muscles to fire properly in order to get your body to move efficiently to create speed. Your brain organizes information based on what your body can do to create movement for maximum speed.
With speed training, the swing starts to sequence better. What does this mean? It means your body starts to move in the proper sequence in the swing. Legs, then hips, then torso, then arms, then hands and club. This starts to happen without any instruction because the brain starts to self-organize. It happens all the time with my students. While we may work on technique to create speed, the majority of our focus is on intent for max effort swings. When this happens, the brain self-organizes and sequences all the moving parts properly to create speed. This equates to a better, more efficient swing.
While speed training for golf aims for increasing clubhead speed, there are other benefits. Better sequencing and the brain self-organizing, are two great benefits to speed training than just being able to hit the ball farther.
